Persistent Scatterer Interferometry (PSI) Technique for the Identification and Monitoring of Critical Landslide Areas in a Regional and Mountainous Road Network

A reliable road network is a vital local asset, connecting communities and unlocking economic growth. Every year landslides cause serious damage and, in some cases, the full disruption of many networks, which can last from few days to even months. The identification monitoring with conventional methods on an extended complex be rather difficult process, as it requires significant amount time resources. Chania regional unit island Crete Greece typical example, connects, over long distances, remote mountainous villages other communities, well main urban centers, are mainly located across shore. Persistent scatterer interferometry (PSI) remote-sensing technique that provide cost-effective solution, used identify monitor slow-moving ongoing large areas such those networks. This study applied PSI unit, using novel parallelized (P-PSI) processing chain, developed by Operational Unit Center for Earth Observation Research Satellite Remote Sensing BEYOND Institute Astronomy Astrophysics, Space Applications National Observatory Athens (BEYOND) rapid areas, most critical landslide network. application P-PSI speeded up total required factor five led 235 new landslides. identified were correlated pre-existing inventory open access visual data create complete relative map, thus offering valuable tool stakeholders.
